So in summation, jagman: It is completely okay to physically unplug the USB device from the computer without ejecting it, yet do that ONLY when: 1) You are sure you are no longer letting the computer write/read to the USB device (after transferring your files), AND 2) You see the USB's transfer LED light has stopped lighting up.
I used to get a notification (in a box) along with a sound when I connected a USB device and "safe to remove" notification when I ejected a USB device. I no longer get any notifications when connecting and ejecting. What must somehow have gotten changed and where do I go to put it back to the original setting?
I'm going to mark this thread closed for now, as I had no problem ejecting the external drive yesterday. I had noticed that CCleaner's monitoring option was on by default, and I discontinued this before connecting the Seagate drive.

Also, inserting and ejecting the disk ought to produce an autoplay prompt each time- but it doesn't. Seems a feebly designed area if you try repeatedly inserting and ejecting a disk. If you eject the disk, and click on the DVD/RW icon in the navigation pane of explorer, this seems to force a scan- green progress bar- and explorer and WMP update.
I have few programs and services that appear to be preventing me from ejecting my external HDD. These appear in event viewer as event 225. One of them is Windows Defender (msmpeng.exe) preventing disk ejection. Why would WD be preventing ejection of this
Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device - Is there any solution? I connect an extrnal HDD to take backups on a daily basis, and have been doing so for a number of years. Recently I've been having problems removing the device when the backup is complete.
The consensus seems to be developing that, if you click Eject and it disappears from the list, it's safe to remove because most Removable USB devices are defaulted to the "Quick Removal" Policy anyway.
